Winter is a knotty clock time to be a bird . Many of the fruits that linger into wintertime farther compass north are long gone before the first cold front blows through our region . Fortunately for our square supporter , there are some great garden works that can be a food reference for them in wintertime .

Aronia arbutifolia , Zones 4–9

This pocket-sized , shrubby tree makes a lovely specimen plant life . It produces wads of lilliputian red yield that is n’t ready for birds to eat until winter . The yield becomes more seeable once the leafage is shed . In the outpouring it is covered with lilliputian apple bloom – like flowers in pink and white , highlight with new greenish foliage .

Pink muhly grass

Muhlenbergia capillaris , Zones 5–9

This North American aboriginal grass is so moderately in descent with its froth of pink seed question held above dark light-green foliage . These showy florescence also ply nourishing seeds for wench . Give the flora a smudge with full sun and skillful drainage to help them perform their best .

‘Warren’s Red’ possumhaw

Ilex decidua‘Warren ’s Red ’ , zone 5–9

‘ Warren ’s Red ’ is a deciduous , multitrunked bush that typically develop up to 15 feet tall and 12 base full . The bright reddish Berry that form up and down the branches are laughably jazzy once the leaves fall off . The proboscis have attractive dappled bark and look really good limbed up to make pocket-sized trees . This works grows best in full Dominicus to partial shade and in moist , acidulous soil that is fertile in constituent matter .

‘Fuyu’ persimmon

Persimmon‘Fuyu ’ , Zones 7–10

‘ Fuyu ’ persimmon is a beneficial landscape industrial plant that produces delectable , non - acerbic fruit . It is a small tree that stay under 20 feet grandiloquent and wide , with an attractive shape , great fall color , and very nice orangish fruit that ripens in late twilight and early winter . Give this tree full sun and moist , fertile , well - drained soil .

Roses

Rosaspp . and cvs . , Zones 3–9

There are wads of beautiful roses that produce abundant hip . When growing these smorgasbord , be sure to lay off deadheading in late summertime to give the fruit a chance to grow before the cold set in . The following cultivar make great hedging that furnish both food and protection for birds : ‘ danseuse ’ , ‘ Hansa ’ , ‘ Katy Road Pink ’ , ‘ Penelope ’ and ‘ Basye ’s Blueberry ’ . The list could go on .
