HARICOT VERT ( OR POURPRES ? )
String bean are so delicious – I mean a completely different vegetable experience – when freshly picked and make immediately ( like many summer vegetables ) . It ’s one of those butter and saltiness thing . – like sweet Zea mays . We just are certain to get really safe quality butter ( cultured Vermont butter – the type with sea salt crystal coquette into it ) . A bit pricey , but it ’s just one of the greatest pleasures of make a domicile veg garden .
I ’ve plant so many mixture of beans this year that it remind me about the study involved – not with planting , for that is the easy part , but about how tough it is to pick and clean house them . What was I believe ? When I factor in the hours of bending over and hand picking bean in the hot Sunday it makes me think that I probably should have indue in levy some offspring as my parent did . It all fix complete sense now . We were just child project that sometimes require school supply in the pin . No wonder I detest summer now .

Salpiglossis has been on my list for some time now .
If you ca n’t find it at a garden center or if it is a cum of an annual or perennial often seen in old catalog but never , ever seen in tangible life , I must endeavor to master it . My experiment and trial with get really fine salpiglossis – a relative of the tomato really ( solanaceae ) which was once quite popular as a bungalow garden annual a century ago , has ultimately paid off . I actually have some gravid planting in full bloom ! The trouble is , the coloration I select is unexciting in the garden .
My deception were many , and I will recap the experience later this fall when I begin my ‘ how to acquire ’ posts again , but they all were based around patience , good research and paying care to specific nutritional and cultural requirements . I guess that could be applied to attain mastery with many things one grow , but tpypicaly most plants are foregiving of a bit of neglect or mis - whole step . Not salpiglossis .
I also consider that its common name does n’t help build up a fanbase here – ‘ Bearded Tongue ’ – which may have been appealing back in 1835 when this plant was delight a big pursual , but today , perhaps only the most kinky hippy might find a bearded tongue appeal ( not that I do n’t , however – do n’t pass judgment me . ) .
I ’m succeeded with this variety sold as ‘ Black Trumpets ’ which I suppose is dour enough to be considered ‘ black ’ in the flowered world , but a better name may have been “ Gooey Blueberry Pie Filling ” as that is just what the corolla ’s look like – especially after it rains I should contribute . This is a peak which looks its fine on a quick , gay evening .
Do n’t get me wrong , I love oily , dark and broody colors in the garden , but this one may need some help when it comes to display . A purist when it comes to container planting , I prefer to constitute my annuls trammel one variety and one colour per container to really make a command , I think some lime immature foliation might have helped these container .
MY OKRA TRIALS
I ’ve been collecting recipe for okra – Amerindic , southern , and many Asian recipes for I just know that when the okra starts come into the kitchen ( we have 12 different types this class ! ) , that I will be pressured to make legion dishes which I ’ve been promised may aid sway even the those repulsed by the slime to convert into okra lovers . If not ? Then okra pickles , I say .
I have so many okra plant institute here and there , plus a dozen or so in large remains pots that it ’s set out to expect more like southern Georgia here than central Massachusetts . I really have no musical theme how well they will do , but each plant appears healthy and tall , with many flower beginning to unfold . The flowers themselves are attractive , with their hibiscus - like structure ( they are related ) , but the pod anticipate some upheaval around here as this is the first time that we ’ve invited this plant into our garden . So daring !
That ’s enough – for I could go on and on with the color purple . Butterflies on Verbena bonariensis , gloxinia , phlox , both yearly and perennial , agapanthus … … time to stop and have a margarita !
