Young Squash Hope for Heat ; Tomatoes Await Second SeedingThe “ mourning band ” among the squash plants in the photograph are the celebrated Italian cherry poppy .   I ’ve been trying to get this weed found in my garden for the last two year , so I ’m very glad to see poppy seedlings all over in the garden this spring.~ Rick

Too early !

article-post

I on a regular basis push the springiness season , andI enjoy the machismo of have the first tomato plant in town .

I transplanted some dinky tomatoes and some Tromba di Albenga squash seedling into the garden a week ago , and as the photo present , it was still a bit too cold .

I madelittle plastic hotcapsto cover the plant , but rather of staying above 10 degree ( Celsius ,   10C = 50F ) it dunk to almost 7 degree a few nights .

The tiny little tomatoes all break down and the vigorous squash seedling were stunted .

I still have hopes that a new heat while will push the squash seedling back onto the quick track , but there ’s a good chance that wo n’t happen . Once stunted , plants seldom recover .

I ’ve already protrude a novel passel of seedling in the fluorescent light growth sleeping accommodation I utilize to protrude cum in spring .

Last weekend I visited some vegetable garden along the river in the nearby town of Chiavari , and one farmer there enjoyed show up me his three dissimilar seedings of fava bean .

Thefirst seedingsuffered from the inordinate rains , thesecond seedingwas doing very nicely , and thethird seedingwas just emerge from the soil .

The farmer explained to me thathe triple seeds every year , because with the vagaries of winter atmospheric condition , he can never be sure if an early seeding or a late seeding will end up being most fat .

Early beans bring a higher monetary value , late sown beans are more reliable , but have small crops .   Mid - time of year seedings suffer if January is moth-eaten , but prosper and produce the best of all if January is squeamish . So every year is a gamble , and this farmer hedges his stake by seed multiple times every year .

Even though I do not sell the vegetable that I grow , I am very nervous about their success .

Last class I had my cherry tomato implant in mid - February , the weather was nice and the plants chute up to six feet tall by the goal of April , when the rains came , along with the fungus , and I watched all the plant life , full of unripe yield , sour brown in the space of three Day , the victim of a fell fungal attack .

I replant instantly , and end up harvesting a later , but very goodish amount of yield nonetheless .

This year I ’m not imbed so early , because it was icy cold in former February .   At this point , I ’m opting for a slightly late but secure love apple crop , and crossing my fingers that it does n’t pour out in May again this yr .   But if it does , I ’ll just replant .
