I ’m beginning to conceive that Irvin and Pauline Faria ’s garden in Carmichael , California , is much larger than I primitively thought ! We ’ve featured Pauline ’s gardenhere , here , here , andhere . In this week ’s installment , we get to see their beautiful Machiai .
Irvin says,“We wanted to make a tranquil spot in Pauline ’s Garden where we and visitors could sit and quietly mull over on the beauty of nature in concordance with the garden .
“ To fulfil this goal a location was selected where there was an unimpeded vista which yield the illusion that the garden has no boundary . Traditionally used in Japan by guests waiting for teatime ceremony is a Machiai or “ waitress place ” . Our design was based on a Machiai we had seen in thePortland Nipponese Garden . Moreover , as water is a key factor in most Japanese garden we decided on a construction site next to our all - season course creek .

Once blackberry were clear , a herculean labor , from the land the website was carved out of the side James Jerome Hill . Access to the Machiai need building a wooden bridge deck across the creek . Then woodland plantings of Nipponese maples , azalea , and ferns were ushered in to the sphere .
Soon the space begin to take a sure mood and fibre that it reveals today . Later a wind up step path was supply which chair to the upper garden . Among the pic is the view from the Machiai as seen in both bounce and drop . ”
Yet again , gorgeous . Thanks so much , Irvin , for sending in these photos !
