It ’s that time of class again .   Spring has been teasing us for weeks , winter makes a brief encore ( in the form of a rather striking blizzard ) , and then , seemingly without word of advice , the sun pushes its way out from behind rain cloud and it ’s reliably ardent . Every mean solar day . In my neck of the wood in westerly North Carolina , the daffodils number up first . But before long , in quick succession , we have an copiousness of blowball , purple dead nettleand an array of yield flower , all for the bees to feast on . The race to fill up the super has get down !

With the flowered smorgasbord get along the queen prison cell . The bee are as eager to get started on the season as the people — probably more so!—and if conditions allow , they are busting out of their nettle rash within a matter of weeks . Spring is a precarious time for honeybee , though ; warm temperatures have them participating , impart the hive often and using up winter storage quickly , but there ’s not always much in bloom for them to substitute it with just yet .

Weekly Spring Hive Checks

This is where you get along in , trusty apiarist : Check your hivesweekly in the give . In the first other spring review , you might find you need to move supers around to put the brood nest back on the bottom ( the queen like to move upward in her laying form ) and to perform a spry check for queen cells . If your bees still have plenty of love , bully , but do n’t think they ’re out of the woods yet . At the next week ’s inspection , you may not even get to the hive but do a spry heft trial ( lifting the hive to get a sensation of its exercising weight ) to determine how much dearest they still have . If it ’s light , plan to flow them if necessary .

Guard Against Swarming

During the third week ’s review , you ’ll believably need to get back into the beehive again . If flush are blooming and temperature are systematically warm , be on the lookout for queen mole rat cell . These long , goober - shape cellular telephone are the beginnings of swarm preparation . In those mobile phone , prole will elevate Modern queens for when theswarmtakes the old queen to begin a new settlement . Most beekeepers do n’t like to let their bees swarm — not only do you recede very valuable livestock , but there ’s no guarantee that those bees will go where they decide to last . This is especially true for urban apiculturist .

Successive swarming , where a colony casts off horde after swarm after horde in the same year , significantly weakens the hive . This point bring us to the next two authoritative spring task : giving the bee more space and ready a split , both in the sake of deter stream .

If you do see queen cadre , you ’ll have to decide how you want to go up the situation , as   it means the cycle are already work towards swarming . How you do depends on where you be , your panache of beekeeping , how potent your colony is , and what your aim are run forward . This is where good enquiry and solid suspicion used together really pay off . Your options include but are n’t limited to :

Even as a natural beekeeper , I ’d strongly boost you to keep your bees and not allow them to swarm if at all possible . While swarming is the sign of a genuinely strong and healthy beehive , those bee will be more likely to survive and thrive in your apiary rather than out in the world , where they may be removed , spray or destroy .

natural spring is one of my favorite times of class , and while the flowers and sunshine usher hope and rejuvenation for all of us , we must take our roles as beekeepers seriously and make time to run to them . Feed them if they run out of beloved depot . Conduct unconstipated inspections until the honey flow gets rolling and to stay on top of pullulate actions . The best fashion to thwart swarming is by render your colonies more spacebeforethe season takes off . And , of class , make your splits : Whether you sell them for gain or flourish your apiary , everyone gain ground !
