“ ‘ When you were a tike , where did you go for daydreaming , reverie , and reflection ? ’ is one of the first questions I inquire client when I start work with them on a projection , ” reveals landscape painting fashion designer Julie Messervy of Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio ( JMMDS ) . “ It gets them thinking about what they love . ” After talking with the owner of this mild 80 - by-80 - foot property in Cambridge , Massachusetts , Messervy and Anna Johansen ( a landscape architect and the projection managing director ) live that this couple ’s dream garden would be sustainable , and admit water features and places to unbend around their home ( which was designed by Wolf Architects , Inc. ) .

The owners also wanted to preserve the mature trees on the dimension . In increase to comprise these desires , JMMDS had interesting challenges to operate around . One was landscaping the nursing home ’s dual - purpose entranceway and driveway , which is somewhat small and tucked beside a retaining wall , and needed softening and shade . They also want to optimise access to the outdoor area , which is narrow with depart level surrounding the house .

A staircase of weather brand and permeable pea crushed rock equipped with a “ handwriting rill ” ( a hand rails that function as a water system rill ) was design to yoke upper and lower gardens and maximise the space between the home and the neighbor ’s fence . The stairway is flanked by plants tolerant of strain lighting : Aruncus dioicus(goat ’s beard),Anemone‘Honorine Jobert’,Lamiumspp . , andAster divaricatus(white woods aster ) . exposure by : Susan Teare .
The ground plane in front of the place serves doubled - duty as the drive and entryway . To stay in melodic phrase with the owners ’ wish to be as sustainable as possible , JMMDS used bluestone , limestone , and pea gravel to cover the ground , create an attractive entry that is also permeable , reducing water overflow .
This steel weewee component function as a water fountain , a soothing feature for the owners to enjoy . From here , water circulates to the deal rill along the step , and to the larger syndicate at the speculation hut . The curve of the hand rill and blade edging were precisely design ; Messervy explain that they had to “ connect to each other and visually sing back and forth . ” brand work fabricated and install by artist Peter Andruchow and sculptor Richard Duca . photograph by : Susan Teare .

Wanting to add luxuriance to the entrance , but having modified ground space to work with , JMMDS constructed a living paries on the retaining wall that connect to the household ’s entry and , as Messervy total , “ provides a sense of movement up to the front door . ” Since it ’s a north - present rampart that get a luck of shade , they primarily used ferns and ghost - loving groundcovers likeCornus canadensis . NativeBetula papyrifera(paper birch tree ) was included in the planter that flank the garage threshold , creating an entrance that see “ nested ” in its quoin of greenery .
This tranquil speculation hut , design by Wolf Architects , Inc. , drop plantings like liriope , mouse Jenny , hellebore , peppiness , Clethra alnifolia , and fern , and is in earshot of the calming sounds of H2O . The owners expressed their love for the property ’s several existing 60 - understructure - tallPinus strobus(white pine ) , mention that they wanted to feel they were “ living in the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . ” These towering Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree give the proprietor screening and privacy for their four - storey home base . And the shade and windbreak they provide are sure side benefits .

The north - front support wall at the dwelling house ’s front entrance is planted with tad - patient of perennial . Plants admit fern , such asPolystichum acrostichoidesandDryopteris erythrosora‘Brilliance ’ ; and ground cover , such asCornus canadensis , Epimedium x rubrum , Gaultheria procumbens , andPolygonatum humile . The wall , built and install by g_space and Philly Green Wall & Roof , is a modular unsullied - steel system of panel made up of 6 - inch - deep angled trough manufactured by Green Living Technologies International . “ Most of the garden is suspicious , but there is one sunny localisation on the side of the theater , ” says Messervy . JMMDS designed an ipe pack of cards for this pip — dubbed “ the suntrap”—to take reward of the little sunlight available , creating a venue for the owners to host intimate gatherings . When walk from the suntrap to the back of the property , the footing level shake off about 5 to 6 base , and the passage area is fairly narrow-minded . Needing to provide a way to venture to the back of the attribute , JMMDS make a stairway , about 4 animal foot wide-cut , with dance step of endure steel and permeable pea stone . The curve of the stairway is intentional so as to not disturb the roots of the cherished whitened pines .
JMMDS plan this ipe deck of cards , which sits in the one sunny place in the garden , as an lengthiness of the upper deck and steps of the same material . The innovation of the table , also by JMMDS , was intended to reverberate the round steel water element near it . “ Every detail matters in a small space like this , ” take down Messervy . be given along the stairway is a steel “ hand rivulet ” ( a handrail that doubles as a piss rill ) , which connects the upper and lower area of the garden — maximise the narrow blank . Water from the sword bubbler near the suntrap circulates to the hand rill , down the steps , and then into the with child pond in front of the meditation army hut . Also design by Wolf Architects , Inc. , this space serves as a retirement to enjoy the quiet the property has to tender . It ’s topped with a green roof designed and installed by Apex Green Roofs ; JMMDS advise on the rooftop planting of mostly genus Epimedium , heucheras , Solomon ’s seal , liriope , andCornus canadensis . Surrounded by the calming sounds of trickling weewee and soft textures of spook - loving plant , the owners are gratuitous to fully relax under the fly-by-night canopy in their garden tantrum for reflection .
