Four WUR students were awarded prize last Friday during the award ceremonial of the Thesis Award 2021 of the University Fund Wageningen . Corentin Bisot won in the field of environmental sciences with his thesis on the growth deportment of grease fungi and was honored as the overall winner . According to the panel , Selena Koene , Carolina Sarzana , and Sanne Put write the best theses within the domains of biography sciences , societal sciences and agrotechnology , and food sciences .
For his captain ’s thesis , Corentin Bisot ( MSc Earth and Environment ) conducted research into the growth behavior of so - called Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi under various environmental conditions . These dirt fungus make turgid , complex cloak-and-dagger meshing and spring a symbiotic relationship with various works and Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . They pass on nutrients from the stain to the plant life and , in return , invite carbon resource . A well - functioning connection can make a positive donation to the alimentary cycle in farming systems , and a better understanding of how these underground connection get can give us cue on how to shake optimum symbiosis .
Growth and forking of fungusBisot appear at the effects of temperature and the presence of nutrient in the soil on the way the fungus grow and branches out . He did this by an enormous amount of mellow - resolution photographs of the development of the fungus in petri dishes under different conditions , for which he used a lately developed automatic set - up . He then analyze this data with various algorithms and was capable to come to some interesting conclusions about the growth of the kingdom Fungi . For deterrent example , the fungi develop quicker at high temperature , adapt their growth patterns to survive complex body part , and branch out more when there is an odd distribution of indissoluble nitrogen and phosphorus in the grease .

Bisot not only made role of novel techniques and brought to light interesting finding , but he also show to be a good writer , according to the panel : " His thesis is well - structure , well - exemplify and well - written ; basically , it read like a novel , in which the reader becomes eager to acquire how the next hurdle have been take . "
Bisot ’s findings give to the development of a example that can be used in an agronomical context . Before that bechance , however , a lot of research still need to be done on other aspect of the increment of these fungus kingdom .
Award ceremonyThe award ceremony took place on campus for the first time in two years this class , during a special Clarence Day for donors , the Friends of the University Fund Wageningen , who financially support the Thesis Award . The achiever receive their prizes in the bearing of dozens of Friends , the jury members , the winners , supervisory program and chairholders , and home and friends of the winner . This year ’s jury chairman was Prof.dr.ir . Francine Govers , Professor of Molecular Phytopathology at Laboratory of Phytopathology of WUR .
