A husband and wife duo make an incredible team caring for a container garden full of colorful annuals
Happy Monday GPODers !
Last week we did a petty call to action onour Instagram(be sure to give a follow if you are n’t already ! ) , asking folks to commit in photos of their summer containers in all their resplendence . Lila Johnson , who garden in Mill Creek , Washington , so kindly answer our call , and today we ’re checking out her colourful container full of the most vibrant annuals .
Hi , I ’m answer the call , photos of my container in full summertime bloom .

I ’ve been gardening forever ( almost 60 years ) and planting containers has never been my firm suit . I know the quondam saying of “ thriller - filler - spiller , ” but this year because of the cost of plants , well , I just sort of cast aside what was leftover into my sens .
We have a very big yard for our HOA residential district and although over the past 27 years we ’ve added perennial , annual still eat a lot of our Plant Dollars . This twelvemonth we consolidate the pots / containers around our two primary patio areas , where we spend most of our days and they are visible from inside our home too .
Both my hubby and I are in our other 80 ’s and I am starting to feel that we may have to plant more containers and less in the many ecosystems around our grand , but we ’ll figure that out next give ! BTW , I plant and he fertilize and deadheads for me . ( My manpower better out in a rash when I deadhead flowers , petunias are not good to me ! And it ’s pretty unmanageable to “ snarf ” off a spent blossom fall apart garden gloves . ) We make a good squad ! love !

A beautiful grouping of cohesive containers fetch a daddy of coloration to the shade , however , my favorite part of these creations are ornamental branch that add a fleck more summit and interest . While branches , pinecones , and all sorts of cuttings are unglamorous in winter arrangements , you do n’t often see the same interest apply to summertime container . This is a great model of what we ’re lose out on !
A faithful facial expression at those shadiness container to see all the ravisher that made their agency to these plenty . While Lila says containers are n’t her unattackable suit , I would have to dissent ! “ Thriller - filler - trotline ” is a classical paper , but there is no merriment seeing the same styles over and over again . While this recipe might have been random , sometimes the practiced meal come from cast off together whatever you have in the kitchen .
Yet another interesting container arrangement , have a smaller bare - branch accent . Potentially located close to the pigeonholing we view above , the containers emphatically come out to be related but not entirely matching . Again , Lila insist containers are n’t her stiff suit , but create cohesive invention with so many different plants is no leisurely task !

I also utterly adore the summation of Funka into these container in the shade — in this container seem to be the ‘ tropic Dancer ’ variety ( Hosta‘Tropical Dancer ’ , Zones 3–8 ) . Another rare gain to containers that was a outstanding achiever for Lila .
sensory in the shade , but empyrean color in the sunlight . Bright yellow gazania and hot pinkish vervain — potentially verbena Cadet Upright ™ ‘ Hot Pink Wink ’ ( Verbena‘Balcadopwi ’ , annual)—make for a red-hot and sheer combination .
More beautiful sun - have intercourse combinations , carry on with gazania and verbena while adding some geranium to the mixing . Of course , the real stars of these pots though are the dead unbelievable double petunias , potentially the variety Tumbelina Bella ( Petunia‘Tumbelina Bella ’ , one-year ) .

Lastly , those incredible petunias make another appearance in mottled shade , backed up by an sensational hydrangea .
And thankfully for us , this is n’t the only glimpse of Lila ’s garden we get this calendar week . Along with these unbelievable container , she institutionalise along several photos of the rest of her garden . Be certain to check back tomorrow , where we ’ll be returning to Washington and seeing more of what Lila is maturate this summer .
