A California gardener advocates for getting out of a rut and trying something new
Today ’s photos come from John Erskine of San Carlos , CA .
I ’ve been gardening on this property in San Carlos , California , for 18 years . Originally the backyard had nothing in it ; I ’ve planted everything that you see . Since that time , I ’ve learned that origin from trees can really travel a long way ! In my peak layer I ’m always discovering radical from trees I ’ve planted .
Here ’s my advice : Do n’t be afraid to change thing around and try young flowers and plants and young combination . If you have grow tired of something , take it out and try something newfangled . It ’s a wonderful way to keep your garden youthful .

The get season is long here ( 10 calendar month ) , so I care to keep the garden looking good most of the year with burst of flower at certain times of the year . First is thetulips’peak , then comes the spring annuals ’ bill , follow byroses , a midsummer peak , and ending with a later - summertime of peak ofasters , black - eyed susans , dahlias , andornamental grasses .
The garden never looks exactly the same from one twelvemonth to the next , as I ’m constantly trying novel plants , moving things around , and indulging my changing tastes .
I usually do n’t think of roses as bear other plants acquire through them , but this‘Graham Thomas’(Zones 5–9 ) , ‘ Mary Rose ’ and a match of others look beautiful when combined with theCineraria stellata(Zones 9–10 ) .

fountain is usher in by colorful bulk of tulip .
I love the spring annuals pictured here : Virginia fund ( Malcolmiamaritima ) , corn cockle ( Agrostemma‘Milas ’ ) , ‘ Solar Fire ’ ( Ursinia anthemoides ) , and five spot ( Nemophila maculata ) .
More annuals : Indian corn cockle ( Agrostemma‘Milas ’ ) , Minoan lace ( Orlayagrandiflora ) , and tidy tip ( Layiaplatyglossa ) .

Still more annuals : ‘ Solar Fire ’ ( Ursiniaanthemoides ) , Virginia stock ( Malcolmiamaritima ) , Santa Barbara daisy ( Erigeronkarvinskianus),Dianthus , and ‘ Fama Blue ’ pincushion flower ( Scabiosacaucasica‘Fama Blue ’ ) .
Mexican bush sage(Salvialeucantha , Zones 8–10 ) andorange California poppy(Eschscholzia californica , annual )
I fuck this panorama looking back at our household . render are angel horn ( Brugmansia‘Charles Grimaldi ’ , Zones 8–10 ) and the pink wine ‘ Marjorie Fair ’ .

This is my backyard in late spring , with poppy and an eastern snowball viburnum ( Viburnum opulus‘Sterile ’ , zone 3–8 ) on the right .
