Cranberries are a staple of the Thanksgiving table . I am not one to apprise a quivery , jelly - same heap . I go for the relish : texture , flavor and insolence . This is the best cranberry gusto that I have ever eaten – has three wide-eyed seasonal ingredients – and it take just 5 proceedings to make .

This recipe was from my mother - in - law , Marguerite Sargent . Maggie made it with refined sugar , however I wish it much well with maple sirup .

Marguerite ’s Cranberry Orange Relish

For as long as I have know her , my mother - in - law , Marguerite Sargent made this relish every single Thanksgiving . It is refreshful , tart and sweet - springy on the palate - a nice counterpoint to all of the other laboured food for thought . She used to grind it in a meat grinder way back when , but used the food processor in more recent years . Marguerite used an honest-to-god formula for this that she start out out of a newspaper many years ago - since I do not have the exact formula - this is my version of how I think she made it . I care to excite in 5 or 6 drops of my homemade orangeness bitters . Sometimes I add a tablespoonful or two of orange liqueur like Grand Marnier , Cointreau or Gran Gala .

Makes about 4 cup

1 constituent naval orange , wash and reduce into eighths1 bag clean cranberry , preferably organic , washed and picked overAbout 1/3 to 1/2 cup real maple sirup

Put the orange piece into a nutrient processor and pulse until it is in lowly pieces , but not pureed . Add the cranberry and beat until they are in low piece , but not pureed . The gusto should have grain . swarm in the 1/3 cup maple syrup and pulsation just to aggregate .

channelize the relish to a bowl . taste perception for sweetness - it should be tart and tangy - yet sweet enough . Add more sirup if pauperization be ( up to another 1/4 to 1/3 cup . Cover and refrigerate for a few hour ; it is upright to make it a daytime or so before . Once it has mellowed , taste it again for sweetness and adjust as necessary .
