Most of us who love to garden know it can easily become an compulsion . But few take it to the same extreme that nurseryman Roger De Muth has .
“ What start out as a hobby demand some practice session time away from my computer end up as a tumid jungle enveloping the planetary house , ” he says in his bookA Hobby Gone Berserk . This garden on parade is attractively captured in the book ’s stunning photography , which displays his various garden layer at their peak of beauty . “ I shoot image of the gardens nearly every day , using my iPhone and digital camera , ” read De Muth . “ Quite often , I shoot aspect photos by stitch multiple shots together . The moving-picture show give me a record of each year , register what works and what does n’t work . ”
De Muth inherited his heat for garden from his English - born grannie , Hannah , who grew “ one of everything ” in her garden in New Jersey . De Muth take a like anything - goes glide path , mix industrial plant commonly grown in Central New York gardens — dust-covered millers , flowering kale and cabbage , coleus and hostas , to name a few — with the unexpected and striking , including tropic banana plant andelephant spike . “ In each of the corners of the front gardens , I have planted red and green bananas in pots . The immense leaves are a real dividing line to all of the other plants , ” he says .

Despite the eclectic mix , Demuth repeats plant patterns throughout each of his garden beds to make harmoniousness and cohesion . One of his gardening rules of quarter round is to always to have a background , as he does in his paintings . “ There is ordinarily an evergreen , a tree , or tall plants that help give lower plant life a background . Sometimes there is a treillage with vine , espaliered apple trees , or tall arborvitae hedgerow along the back edge of each border . In the front of the house , there are tall topiary yew along the back to give the flowers and get out more definition , ” he say . De Muth also train trees over metal and wire frames to create natural archway and living fences .

De Muth has been laud for his gardening obsession , winning several landscaping awards and have his property featured in a National Garden Conservancy tour .
